If you break down the word “re-sentiment,” it offers insight into a mistake the brain makes. That mistake is to take the past and automatically bring it into the future. Our brains are magnificent learning instruments, but the reality of this new moment isn’t simply a repetition of a script created by the past.
Present moment awareness is about being where your feet are, as they teach in Alcoholics Anonymous. Yes, we learn life’s terrain by experience, but when the brain overworks it creates distortions in what is true “now.”
Survival is a primitive drive, and there are parts of our ancient brains that leverage reactivity and looking to avoid danger. When this tendency overworks, it gets in the way of allowing the drive to fulfillment to rule fear. Living in constant fear and negativity overworks our adrenals and creates exhaustion.
We are much more than the limitations of past experiences. We have the potential to redefine our paths every day. There is a conscious self that knows this. Don’t drown it out with fear and resentment!
With love, Rosanne
